Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Patna invites applications for admission to the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) programme, starting in July 2009 in the following Departments. The Areas of Research at IIT Patna are as follows:

Computer Science and Engineering

Networking, Computer Network Management, QoS, Congestion control and Network Traffic Monitoring. Computer Security, Network Security, Information Security and Cryptography. Mobile Computing, Ad-hoc Networks, Sensor Networks and MANET.

Electrical Engineering

Power Systems (Optimization, Operation & Control, Security, Restructuring, Flexible AC Transmission Systems, Renewable Energy Sources), Communication Engineering (Digital Communication, Wireless Communication, Signal Processing, Cellular Communication)

Mechanical Engineering

Vibration, Soft tissue mechanics, Manufacturing, Condition monitoring, Biomedical robotics, Computational mechanics, Fracture, FEM, Composite, Heat transfer, Boiling and Condensation, Two-phase flows, Refrigeration & Air-conditioning, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Turbulent Flows, Interfacial flows in yield stress fluid, Laser material processing, Flow of granular materials, Non-traditional manufacturing, Biomedical Bone Drilling, Soft computing, Laser Forming

Condensed Matter Physics (Magnetic Nanomaterials, Superconductivity, CMR Materials, Molecular Electronics, Conjugated Polymer/ Metal Interface: Theory and Experiment), Optics (Optical Cryptography, Digital Holography, Optical Pattern Recognition, Fractional Fourier Transform: Theory and Experiment)

Humanities and Social Sciences

Economics
(Macroeconomics, Political Economy of Globalization, Privatization & Liberalization, WTO and India, Law and Economics)

English
(Indian writings in English, Contemporary Literary Theory (its applications on writings from across the world), Law and Literature, Language Teaching)

Linguistics
(Sociolinguistics, Applied Linguistics, Language and Computers, Linguistic Theory – Syntax of Indo-Aryan and Tibeto-Burman Languages)

Category of Admission:

The Institute admits PhD students under the following categories:

i) REGULAR

A student in this category works full-time for his/her PhD degree. He/She receives assistantship from the Institute or fellowship from CSIR/UGC or any other recognized funding agency.

ii) SPONSORED (FULL-TIME)

A student in this category is sponsored by a recognized R&D organization, academic institution, government organization or industry for doing research in the Institute on a full-time basis. He/She must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organization with at least one year of professional experience in the respective field. The Institute does not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student. Sponsorship letter (Form-I) must be attached with the application.

iii) SELF-FINANCED

A student in this category works full-time or part-time towards the PhD Programme. He/She must have at least one year of professional experience in the respective field. The Institute does not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student.

iv) PART-TIME

A student in this category is a professionally employed person (including the staff of IIT Patna), who pursues the PhD Programme while continuing the duties of his/her service. He/She must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organization with at least one year of professional experience in the respective field. The Institute does not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student. A No Objection Certificate from the Head of the Institution/Organisation in which he/she is employed (Form-II) must be enclosed at the time of application.

v) EXTERNAL

This category refers to a student employed in an R&D organization/academic institution/industry having adequate research facilities. The research work leading to the PhD degree may be carried out largely in the parent organization of the candidate under a Local Supervisor from the organization but with the overall guidance provided by a faculty member (Institute Supervisor) of the Department/Centre in which he/she is registered. He/She must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organization with at least one year of professional experience in the respective field. The Institute does not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student. A certificate from the Head of the sponsoring Institution/Organisation in which he/she is employed (Form-III) must be enclosed at the time of application.

Note: The word `Form’ used under this section refers to the forms as specified in Pages 4 to 6 of the Application Form for Admission to PhD Programme.

Eligibility Criteria for Admission in to PhD Programme

Ph.D. in Engineering:

For admission to the PhD Programme in Engineering Departments, a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria:


  • Master’s degree in Engineering/ Technology/ Medical Sciences/ Veterinary Sciences/ Pharmacy in a relevant area with a minimum Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 6.5 or 60% of marks.

  • Bachelor’s degree from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/ Technology/ Medical Sciences (from other than IITs) in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks.


Ph.D. in Science:

For admission to the PhD Programme in Science departments, a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria:

  • Master’s degree in Science in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks.

  • Master’s degree in Engineering/ Technology/ Design in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/ Technology/ Design from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0.

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related area in Engineering/ Technology/ Design (from other than IITs) in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks.


Ph.D. in Humanities and Social Sciences:

For admission to the PhD Programme in the department of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS), a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria:

  • Master’s degree in Arts/ Commerce/ Science in a relevant area with a minimum of 55% marks or equivalent.

  • Master’s degree in Engineering/ Technology/ Design in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% marks.

  • Bachelor’s degree from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/ Technology/ Design (from other than IITs) in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks.


Relaxation for SC/ST Candidates:

Eligibility criteria will be relaxed by 5% marks or 0.5 CPI for SC/ ST applicants.

Reservations:

The reservation of seats in admissions for SC, ST, OBC categories and for Persons with Disability (PD) will be as per Government of India rules. OBC (Non-creamy layer) candidates will have to enclose certificate and self-declaration statement as per formats as indicated at Annexures-I and II.

Note:

  • GATE score requirement is exempted for students with Bachelor’s degree from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) with minimum CPI of 8.0.

  • Assistantships from external funding organizations will be available as per terms and conditions of the concerned funding organizations.

  • Students receiving assistantships from the Institute or fellowships from any other funding agencies are required to perform academic duties as per prevailing norms.

  • The continuation of the assistantship/fellowship is subject to satisfactory performance of the assigned duties and satisfactory progress of the student in the PhD Programme.


  • Minimum Experience required for Sponsored (Full-Time), Self-Financed, Part-Time and External Categories of Candidates:

  • Candidate in Sponsored, Part-time and External categories must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organisation with at least one year of professional experience in the respective field.

  • Candidates in Self-financed category should have at least one year of professional experience in the respective field.

Application form can also be obtained from the Assistant Registrar, Indian Institute of Technology Patna, Patliputra Colony, Patna – 800 013, Bihar, on or before 08-04-2009 by ordinary post or in person. To receive application forms by ordinary post, send a request along with a self-addressed, Rs.5/- stamped envelope (24cm x 15cm size). Request for form must be sent in an envelope super-scribed with ‘Request for PhD Application form’.

Filled in application forms complete with copies of mark sheets/certificates and other testimonials and a Demand Draft for Rs.150/- for General/ OBC candidates and Rs.75/- for SC/ST/PD candidates drawn in any nationalized bank and payable at Patna in favour of IIT Patna should be sent to the Assistant Registrar, Indian Institute of Technology Patna, Patliputra Colony, Patna – 800 013, Bihar, to reach on or before 15 April 2009. The words “Application for PhD admission in the Department of _________” should be written on the top of the envelope for sending the completed form.

Candidates applying for more than one department should submit a separate application for each department.

Selection:

The Institute reserves the right to call a limited number of candidates for written test or/ and interview, based on performance in GATE/NET, grades/marks in the qualifying examination, etc.

Last Date for issuing Application Forms by post is: 08-April-2009
Last Date for receipt of completed Application Forms by IIT Patna is: 15-April-2009
